Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox swept their first doubleheader of the 2012 season with a pair of one-run victories, winning the first game in dramatic fashion 2-1 with a walk-off home run and holding on to win a close second game 3-2. The Sky Sox pitching staff held the 51s to just three total runs and nine total hits in the two games.
Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown ended the first game on a high note for Colorado Springs with an opposite-field home run to right field on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning. Brown kept his offensive momentum going by accounting for all three runs in the second game of the set by scoring the first run, after leading off the bottom of the second with a triple, collecting an RBI with a double in the fifth and scoring later in the inning on a RBI single by right-fielder Matt McBride.
Sky Sox left-hander Christian Friedrich (2-1, 2.33 ERA) outdueled Las Vegas right-hander Jesse Chavez (1-1, 3.94 ERA) in the first game of the doubleheader, holding the 51s to only one run in his second consecutive start of at least seven innings. He allowed a run in the first inning on two hits but finished with no runs and two hits in the final six innings of his complete game win to set up the dramatic walk-off shot by Brown. Friedrich also notched six strikeouts for the third consecutive start, and has only allowed one run and six hits in his last 14.1 innings of work.
Colorado Springs right-hander Edgar Gonzalez held the 51s scoreless in four innings of work in game two, but did not qualify for the win. The Sky Sox bullpen withstood a comeback attempt by Las Vegas after Colorado Springs jumped ahead 3-0, with the 51s scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Sky Sox reliever Zach Putnam got the save, his second of the season, by holding Las Vegas scoreless over the last 1.2 innings. He shut the door on the comeback by striking out 51s shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria looking with a man on with Las Vegas slugger Travis Snider, who had seven RBI in the series, on deck. The two wins move the Sky Sox to a winning record for the first time this season at 7-5.
After allowing 14 runs and 18 hits in the series opener, the Sky Sox held Las Vegas to five runs and 16 hits in the last three games of the series to earn their first series win of the season.
Colorado Springs begins a four-game set with the Tucson Padres starting on Tuesday, with the Sky Sox sending out right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (0-2, 11.05 ERA) who is looking for his first win of the 2012 season. He will face off against Tucson right-hander Josh Geer (1-1, 2.70 ERA) in the series opener at 6:05 p.m. MT.
