West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Ronnie Bourquin's bouncing base hit to right in the seventh inning gave the West Michigan Whitecaps the lead, 4-3, and propelled them to a 5-4 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks in game one of the series Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. The win is the second in a row for the ‘Caps, while South Bend drops their eighth straight game.

West Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third with three consecutive doubles. Luis Palacios, Brent Wyatt and Brandon Douglas all doubled to score the runs.

South Bend put a run on the board in the sixth inning thanks to two straight hits and an RBI fielder's choice from Alfredo Marte.

In the top of the seventh, the Silver Hawks jumped in front with some great execution. Two straight hits and a good sacrifice bunt set the stage for Victor Estevez's RBI single which tied the game at two. Reynaldo Navarro followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Isaias Asencio for the 3-2 Silver Hawks' lead.

The Whitecaps wasted no time in coming back. Four consecutive hits, the last of which was Bourquin's single, helped the ‘Caps regain the lead, 4-3. Jordan Lennerton added the eventual winning run with his sacrifice fly.

South Bend made things interesting in the ninth. With two outs, Rossmel Perez reached safely on an error. Pinch-hitter Nelson Gomez doubled to right center to score Perez and bring South Bend within a run. A wild pitch put Gomez, the tying run, at third, but Reynaldo Navarro flied out to center field to end the game.

‘Caps starter Mark Sorensen (1-2) scattered 9 hits in his 7 innings of work for his first win. Sorensen surrendered 3 runs while walking 1 and getting one strikeout.

West Michigan totaled 12 hits. Luis Palacios, Brent Wyatt, Joe Bowen, and Avisail Garcia each had two. Brandon Douglas went 3-4.

Game two of the series is Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. It's ‘Thrifty Thursday' with great food and drink specials for all those in attendance. Thursday is also ‘Rockford Community Night'.
