June 10, 2009 - Beau Brooks homered twice as the Kernels took another step towards a first half playoff berth with an 8-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Wednesday night at Modern Woodman Park in Davenport. The reduces the Kernels âmagic number' to nine to clinch a playoff spot as Kane County fell to Wisconsin and Clinton beat Peoria.
Brooks homered in consecutive at-bats, hitting a two run shot in the third inning and solo HR in the fifth. Roberto Lopez went 2 for 5 with a double and RBI and Ryan Groth was 1 for 4 with a triple and RBI as the Kernels had nine hits.
Kernels starter Will Smith (3-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out four over seven innings for the win. Kevin Nabors and Chris Armstrong each worked a scoreless inning out of the Kernels bullpen. Quad Cities starter Arquimedes Nieto (1-5) allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over 4 innings in taking the loss and Jarred Bogany went 3 for 4 with a RBI and run scored.
