Rainis Silva joins Kernels from Elizabethton

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that C Rainis Silva will join the Kernels from Elizabethton (APPY) and C Kevin Garcia has been placed on the 7-day DL with a left oblique strain. Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.

The Twins signed Silva as a non-drafted free agent on July 9, 2012 and he split last season between Cedar Rapids and Elizabethton, batting a combined .229 with 2 HR and 12 RBI in 43 games. This is his fourth season in the Twins organization and he is a native of Barquisimeto Venezuela.

Garcia has played in six games for the Kernels, batting .250 (6-24) with 3 RBI. He joined the Kernels on May 27 and was signed by the Twins as a minor league free agent on February 23. He was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 30th round of the 2014 First Year Player Draft out of Loyola Marymount.

Silva is active and available for tonight's 6:35 PM game vs. Beloit. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players, with seven players currently on the DL and one player on the Restricted List.

The Kernels begin the second half of the 2016 MWL season tonight with a four game series against the Beloit Snappers, the MWL Affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, at 6:35 PM with the gates opening at 5:30 PM.
