Great Lakes Loons News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Loons opened the second-half of the season with a 2-1 victory on the road against the Lake County Captains at Classic Park on Thursday night.
Newcomer Donavan Tate, who joined the team in Eastlake on Thursday afternoon, sparked the offense in his Loons debut. The former 3rd-overall pick in the 2009 draft (San Diego) singled, homered and drove in both Loons runs in a winning effort.
On the mound, right-hander Isaac Anderson (W, 5-3) took the ball and pitched six shutout innings. The 22-year-old allowed two hits and no walks with eight strikeouts and a hit batsman. Anderson continued a stretch of strong play against Lake County; through 21 innings against the Captains this season, Anderson has allowed four runs, good for a 1.71 ERA, with three walks and 26 strikeouts.
The Loons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on three-single spurt to open the frame against righty Shao-Ching Chiang (L, 4-5). Tate, a righty batter, drove Omar Estevez home from third in the former's first at-bat of the season.
Tate, 25, extended the Loons lead in the fifth with a solo home run off Chiang in the pitcher's final inning of work.
After righty Angel German faced in the minimum in the seventh out of the bullpen, the Loons called upon right-hander Ivan Vieitez (S, 2) to pitch the eighth.
Lake County's offense, minus its three All-Star position players, singled softly three times against Vieitez in the frame. They pulled within a run on an RBI knock from righty Erlin Cerda, who also made his Midwest League season debut.
With the tying runner, Bobby Ison, on third base in the eighth and another man on first for Lake County, Loons catcher Brant Whiting picked off Ison at third base to end the inning. Whiting bluffed a throw to second on an 0-2 pitch to Yonathan Mendoza and induced a scamper from third by Ison. Caught in a rundown, shortstop Brendon Davis applied the tag and the Loons escaped the eighth with a one-run lead intact.
Vieitez faced the minimum in the ninth as the Loons (1-0; 30-41) held on for their eighth one-run win of the season. Lake County (0-1; 40-31) missed the playoffs in the first half by a half-game and still leads the season series 6-5.
Game two of the four-game series between Great Lakes and Lake County commences at 7 p.m. on Friday from Classic Park. Righty Imani Abdullah (0-2, 2.70) hunts for his first win of the season against the Captains and right-hander Casey Shane (5-4, 4.38).
The Great Lakes Loons, hosts of the 2017 Midwest League All-Star Game, have been a Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007 and are in their 10th season. For tickets and more information about the Loons, call 989-837-BALL or visit Loons.com.
