METAIRIE, La. - Nick Franklin homered in extra innings to lift the Tacoma Rainiers to a 3-2 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs at Zephyr Field on Sunday.
With the score tied at 2-2, Franklin led off the top of the 13th inning with a go-ahead solo home run that ultimately put the Rainiers on top for good.
Tacoma originally held a 2-0 lead through the game's first three innings. Mike Zunino scored from second base on a fielding error committed by Zephyrs right fielder Bryan Peterson in the second inning. Alex Liddi drove in another run with a two-out single that plated Franklin in the third.
Jeff Mathis brought New Orleans within a run after belting a solo home run in the fourth inning, and Gorkys Hernandez cleared the way for the tying run to score thanks to an RBI-single in the fifth.
Franklin and infielder Carlos Triunfel each ended the day 3-for-6, leading a Rainiers lineup that combined to collect 10 hits on Sunday. The third baseman Liddi collected a pair of singles and Zunino recorded his seventh double of the season in the second inning.
Reliever Jhonny Nunez improved his record to 3-2 this season after collecting the final out in the bottom of the 12th. Right-hander Danny Farquhar earned his team-leading sixth save this season after striking out the side in the 13th.
Starter Jeremy Bonderman limited the Zephyrs to two runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings in his eighth turn in the Rainiers rotation. The right-hander walked three and struck out two.
