Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

Colorado Srings, CO - Willy Taveras collected three hits, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs as Omaha bounced back from a tough loss last night to down Colorado Springs, 14-4, Sunday afternoon in the second of four meetings at Security Service Field. Every Storm Chaser had at least one hit, including seven different batters who totaled at least two, in the team's highest-scoring game of the year that helped them improve to 19-16 and move into a first place tie with Memphis in the American Conference North Division.

The Storm Chasers struck again in the first inning, as they have scored in their initial at-bat in three of the last four games, on a double by Johnny Giavotella that plated David Lough, who had singled and picked up a steal of second base. The visitors added to their lead in the second when Adam Moore singled with one out, moved to third on a Taveras base hit and scored on Paulo Orlando's bunt single. Taveras and Orlando then pulled off a double steal and scored on an Irving Falu single through a drawn-in infield to make it a 4-0 lead against Tyler Chatwood. The Colorado Springs right-hander had allowed a total of three runs, none over his last 14 frames, in his first four Triple-A starts.

Run-scoring ground outs by D.J. LeMahieu and Ryan Wheeler in the third inning halved the Omaha lead before the visitors got a run back in the top half of the fourth on a run-producing ground out of their own by Falu. Anthony Seratelli manufactured the first of two runs in the fifth when he singled, swiped second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home on another near wild pitch and resulting throw to first base by catcher Lars Davis in an attempt to cut down Moore, who had reached on a walk. Taveras, who played for Colorado Springs in 2011, then tripled to chase home Moore to lengthen the Omaha advantage to 7-2 and finish the scoring against Chatwood, who was handed his first minor league defeat this season after yielding 11 hits over five frames.

Michael Solbach took over in the sixth and made it through his first Triple-A inning unscathed but hurt himself in the seventh by walking the bases loaded. He was able to get out of the jam allowing only one run on a Taveras sacrifice fly that made it a six-run spread before Charlie Culberson's two-run homer in the bottom of the frame brought the hosts within 8-4.

Ryan Verdugo put together his longest outing of the year when the Chasers really needed it before Monday's "bullpen" day, as the southpaw lasted 7 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits while walking three and striking out four to grab his second win of the season. Louis Coleman took over and inherited two runners but got out of the jam with a fly ball out and strikeout to earn his second save. The Chasers then blew the game open with six runs in the ninth, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Chad Tracy, who toiled for the Sky Sox last season, and Moore and a two-run double by Xavier Nady, who collected a pair of two base-hits in the frame and finished 3-for-6. Lough and Orlando each chipped in with three hits while Seratelli and Moore crossed the plate three times apiece.

The series continues Monday night with Omaha left-hander Francisley Bueno making a spot start against Colorado Springs right-hander Drew Carpenter. Coverage of the game gets underway at 7:15 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
