Round Rock Express News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Round Rock Express (20-16) ended up on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel Saturday night, losing to the Tucson Padres (18-18) 6-1 at Keno Sports Complex.
Both teams managed a hit in the first inning, but it wasn't until the third inning when someone finally got on the board. The Padres center fielder Jaff Decker singled to left center off Express starter Ross Wolf with one out in the bottom half of the frame. He came around to score on a ground out two batters later, giving the Padres a 1-0 lead.
The two teams would only muster a combined three hits through the next three innings. All three baserunners advanced to scoring position, but neither offense could bring them around to score.
The E-Train got things rolling in the top of the seventh, when left fielder Joey Butler, fresh off the disabled list, belted a double to left-center field. The next batter, right fielder Jim Adduci crushed a double of his own, his second of the game, to score Butler and tie up the game. Round Rock's offense stranded Adduci at second, one of 13 total runners left on base by the E-Train.
Tucson threatened in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff blast from Gregorio Petit that seemed to be headed out of the park before it met the glove of Butler. Catcher Rene Rivera singled to left field in the next at-bat. He advanced to third on a single from Decker, ending the outing for Wolf. The right-hander threw 6.2 innings, giving up just one run on seven hits. He walked one batter and struck out five in his third quality start of the season. Reliever Evan Meek entered the game and got the next batter to ground out, ending the threat0.
The Padres offense exploded in the bottom of the eighth with a lead-off double from right fielder Dan Robertson. First baseman Brandon Allen singled and promptly stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Meek intentionally loaded the bases following a ground out. He issued a four-pitch walk to the next batter to score the tie-breaking run for Tucson. Rivera hit a single in his next at-bat to score another run and keep the bases loaded. After a mound visit by pitching coach Brad Holman, Meek gave up a double to back-to-back singles to score two more runs, giving the Padres a 5-1 lead. That was it for Meek as manager Bobby Jones called on Lisalverto Bonilla to finish the inning. Bonilla forced the next two batters to ground out to end the inning, but not before another run scored making it 6-1.
Round Rock put the pressure on Tucson in the top of the ninth. Butler drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Shortstop Greg Miclat drew a walk to put two men on with two outs. Padres reliever Daniel Stange issued his third consecutive walk, putting catcher Eli Whiteside on base with six pitches, loaded the bases. Colt Hynes came in in relief of Stange and got center fielder Engel Beltre to strike out and end the game.
For the Express, it was their third loss in six games and the second of the season for Meek. Padres starter Tim Stauffer threw 7.0 innings, allowing the one run on five hits. He walked one batter and fanned six. The win went to reliever Tommy Layne who pitched one hitless inning.
The Express will continue its road trip with game two of four against the Padres tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. CST. Right-hander Josh Lindblom (4-0, 1.96 ERA) will look to get his fifth win as he toes the rubber for Round Rock. The Express will return to Dell Diamond for eight games beginning with Colorado Springs on May 16. For tickets and more information, visit www.RoundRockExpress.com or call (512) 255-2255.
