TACOMA, Wash. - Mike Zunino hit his sixth home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs as the Tacoma Rainiers came up short against the New Orleans Zephyrs 5-3 at Zephyr Field on Monday night.

Zunino hit a two-run home run with one out in the top of the second inning to give the Rainiers an early 2-0 lead, upping the catcher's RBI total to 31 through 28 games this season.

After tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, the Zephyrs pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Ed Lucas drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out double.

New Orleans' Jake Smolinski added an insurance run with a solo homer in the sixth. Bryan Peterson added another with a run-scoring single in the seventh that gave New Orleans an insurmountable three-run edge.

The Rainiers scored a run and loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth before Zephyrs right-hander Chris Hatcher fanned the next three Tacoma batters to close out the game.

Tacoma combined to collect 11 hits on Monday, with Zunino and third baseman Alex Liddi leading the way with two hits each.

Starter James Paxton (2-3) was dealt the loss after holding the Zephyrs to three runs, one earned, on seven hits over 5.2 innings. The left-hander walked one and struck out a team-high 10 batters.
