Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds lost their third straight contest to the Fresno Grizzlies, dropping a 4-3 contest on Monday night at AutoZone Park.
Also for third consecutive game, Memphis (19-17) led in the contest before suffering the come-from-behind loss.
The top three batters in the Memphis lineup accounted for six of Memphis' 10 hits. Kolten Wong went 2-for-3 with a double for his sixth multi-hit effort in his last eight games. Ryan Jackson extended his hitting streak to seven games with two hits. Justin Christian also singled twice.
Chris Dominguez homered for his third straight game to give Fresno a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The long ball was Dominguez' sixth of the season.
The Redbirds took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third after quickly loading the bases with no outs. Jermaine Curtis worked a walk to score Christian before Chad Huffman singled home the club's second run. The inning would end on a costly baserunning mistake from Curtis that prevented the eventual game-tying run from scoring.
Maikel Cleto (1-2) ran into trouble in the sixth inning, allowing two walks and a single to depart from the contest. Reliever Jorge Rondon then entered the game and allowed all three inherited runners to score before retiring the side.
Memphis scored their final run of the contest in the seventh to cut the deficit to one run at 4-3 as J.R. Towles led off with a single. Towles moved to second on a single, advanced to third on an infield groundout, and scored on a Jackson RBI single up the middle.
Cleto was charged with four runs on five hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out four with 90 pitches (55 for strikes).
Rondon was credited with two scoreless innings. Mitchell Boggs and Sam Freeman each finished with a shutout frame.
Michael Kickham (1-0) gave up a pair of runs in five innings for his first Triple-A victory.
The Redbirds and Grizzlies wrap up their series with a 12:02 p.m. series finale on Tuesday afternoon at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Boone Whiting (NR) will make his Triple-A debut against right-hander Boof Bonser (1-2, 4.97).
