Rainiers Rout River Cats, 12-5

TACOMA, Wash. - Eight walks and 10 base hits led the Tacoma Rainiers (9-8) to a 12-5 blowout victory over the Sacramento River Cats (7-10) on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.

Third baseman Danny Muno (1x2, R, 2B, 3 RBI, 3 BB) and second baseman Rey Navarro (1x4, R, 3 RBI) led the offense, driving in a combined six runs. Left fielder Ian Miller (2x4, R, 2 RBI, BB), catcher Mike Marjama (2x4, 2 R, 2B, BB), and first baseman Matt Hague (2x4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB) all checked in with multiple hits.

Rainiers starting pitcher Ariel Miranda logged 3.2 innings of work and allowed three runs on four hits. He tossed 98 pitches (58 strikes) and struck out five while issuing five walks and did not factor into the decision.

Tacoma jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the bottom of the opening frame. Navarro and left fielder Ian Miller both notched two-run singles in the frame. Muno checked in with a bases-loaded walk during the inning, giving the Rainiers their league-leading 11th free pass with the bases loaded this season.

The Rainiers tacked on one run in both the second and seventh innings, before blowing the game open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sacramento rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth and two in the top of the ninth, but never came within fewer than four runs of the Rainiers.

Right-hander Ryan Garton (1-0) relieved Miranda and earned the win out of the bullpen for Tacoma - he worked 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

Tacoma closes out the series with Sacramento, and the homestand, on Monday morning with an 11:35 a.m. PT first pitch. Rainiers right-hander Rob Whalen (2-0, 3.78) will face off against River Cats righty Tyler Herb (1-0, 5.65).
