Rainiers Roughed Up In Loss to Salt Lake

April 25, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - Despite enlisting the assistance of Mariners ace Cliff Lee, the Rainiers still could not quite seem to get the offense on track in a 4-1 loss to Salt Lake at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.

Lee put together a dominating performance in a rehab start with the Rainiers after straining an abdominal muscle during spring training. The 2008 Cy Young Award winner stifled the Bees to just three hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six scoreless innings. Lee's start on Sunday was his franchise debut since being traded to Seattle from Philadelphia on December 16, 2009.

The Rainiers trouble set in when Lee called it a day, as the Rainiers watched Salt Lake quickly jump out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Bees shortstop Gary Patchett's sacrifice fly gave Salt Lake their first run of the afternoon that was followed by a two-run single from catcher Brian Walker two batters later. Third baseman Freddy Sandoval capped things off with an RBI-single to drive in Hainley Statia.

The Rainiers attempted to battle back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from catcher Josh Bard that scored Ryan Langerhans from third. The effort proved too little, too late in what would be the team's fourth loss in their last five games.

Reliever Mike Koplove was dealt the loss for the Rainiers after allowing all four of Salt Lake's earned runs in the outing on three hits over just 0.2 innings of work.

The win on Sunday went to Salt Lake starter Trevor Bell, who put together an impressive outing of his own. The right-hander allowed just the lone Rainiers run on six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts through 6.2 innings. The start was Bell's first since beginning the season on the disabled list.

The Rainiers look to get back to their winning ways when they return to action against the Bees on Monday at 7:00 p.m. Tacoma will send right-hander David Pauley to the mound against Salt Lake lefty Daniel Davidson in the seventh meeting between the two teams this season.
