Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers rode an early lead to an 8-4 series-clinching win over the Tucson Padres in front of 3,168 fans at Cheney Stadium on Thursday.
The Rainiers got off to a fast start in the first inning, jumping out 4-0 thanks in large part to some early control issues from the Padres pitching staff. Tucson combined to throw four wild pitches in the frame, the first of which scored outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from third base to put Tacoma up 1-0 with no outs.
Another wild pitch moved Dustin Ackley to third, setting the infielder up to score off a single from first baseman Matt Tuiasosopo and up the Rainiers lead to 2-0. Designated hitter Mike Carp rounded out the inning with a two-run single that extended a lead Tacoma would hold on to until the end.
The designated hitter Carp and third baseman Alex Liddi turned in the Rainiers only two multi-hit outings after each collected a pair of hits, with Carp leading the lineup with three RBI. Infielder Sean Kazmar delivered his first home run of the season, a solo shot, with one out in the seventh inning.
The infielder Dustin Ackley drew a season-high three walks, increasing his season total to a Pacific Coast League-best 25 over his first 28 games, and notched one of the Rainiers season-high five stolen bases against the Padres on Thursday.
The win went to Rainiers reliever Cesar Jimenez after the left-hander tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Starter Chris Seddon turned in a 4.2-inning performance, surrendering four runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.
The Rainiers (11-17) look to record their first three-game win streak of the season at 7:05 p.m. on Friday when the club begins a four-game series with the Las Vegas 51s. Right-hander Chaz Roe (0-2, 8.25) is expected to start for Tacoma against Las Vegas left-hander Brett Cecil (1-1, 10.64). The game can be heard live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
