Quintanilla Joins Round Rock Roster

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Former University of Texas standout Omar Quintanilla has been assigned to the Round Rock Express roster and will be active for Friday's series opener against the Nashville Sounds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT at The Dell Diamond.

Quintanilla, 29, was signed by the Texas Rangers to a minor league contract Dec. 22, 2010, but has not yet played for the organization. He spent the 2010 season with the Colorado Sky Sox, the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Quintanilla hit .252 with one home run and 15 RBI in 34 games.

Originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round (33rd overall pick) of the 2003 draft, Quintanilla was a two-time All-Big 12 Conference selection while at Texas. He earned Freshman All-America and Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2001 and College World Series All-Tournament honors in 2002 after leading the Longhorns to a national title.

With Quintanilla's activation, outfielder Joey Butler has been assigned to Double-A Frisco, Butler, who started the season with Frisco before being assigned to Round Rock in mid-April, hit .276 (16-for-58) in 15 games with the Express. He tallied one home run, three doubles, two triples, eight RBI and nine runs scored. Butler hit safely in each of his last 10 games with Round Rock, matching Chad Tracy for the team's longest hitting streak this season.

Round Rock (17-10) owns the best record in the PCL and the second-best record in Triple A, trailing only Columbus (21-6) of the International League.
