New Orleans combined for 14 hits off Iowa and never looked back after the first inning as they defeated Iowa 11-5 Friday night at Principal Park.
The Zephyrs got things going early in the top of the first, putting up three runs. The first three Zephyr batters singled to begin the game and on the third single, by Joe Thurston, Vinny Rottino came across home plate after a throwing error by Brad Snyder to give New Orleans an early 1-0 lead. Chris Aguila added a one-out RBI double and Josh Kroeger plated the third run of the inning with an RBI groundout.
Iowa staged a rally in the home half of the inning against Zephyr starter Tom Koehler. The bases were loaded with no outs after Tony Campana singled and Lou Montanez and Snyder both walked. A Zephyr error by Ruben Gotay led to two I-Cub runs to put Iowa down by one at 3-2.
I-Cub starting pitcher Jay Jackson settled in nicely through the fourth inning before running into trouble in the fifth.
Thurston led off the inning with a walk and after Oscar Salazar flied out, back-to-back doubles from New Orleans put the Zephyrs up 5-2 and chased Jackson from the mound.
Esmailin Caridad came in on relief gave up two more runs in the sixth inning. Iowa reliever Chris Carpenter also had a tough night on the mound, surrendering four runs (three earned) in two innings of work. Jeff Stevens, who worked the ninth, was the only Iowa pitcher that did not allow a run.
