Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers found their flow and powered past Reno 8-2 in a series-opening win at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.
The Rainiers made their first foray onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the second thanks to a solo home run from outfielder Greg Halman, his 24th of the season. One inning later Tacoma's lead expanded to two runs after Mike Sweeney's infield single scored Mike Wilson from second base.
Third baseman Matt Mangini blasted a solo home run in the sixth and increased the Rainiers advantage to a trio of runs.
Following a minor Reno rally that saw the Aces score a pair of runs off two hits, outfielder Mike Wilson belted the Rainiers third home run of the night, another solo shot, in the seventh.
Things really opened up when Wilson's two-run single capped off a scoring barrage that saw Tacoma record four runs on two hits in the eighth inning.
Wilson led the Rainiers lineup on Saturday night after notching three hits and driving in three runs with a double and a home run. Carlos Corporan went 1-for-3 with a double and drove in one of the Aces two runs to headline the Reno offense.
Rainiers starter Yoervis Medina tossed 5.2 scoreless innings with four walks and four punchouts en route to his first Triple-A win. Reliever Josh Lueke picked up a save in his debut with Tacoma, giving up just one hit over two innings with four strikeouts.
Right-hander Kevin Mulvey was dealt the loss in a start for the Aces after watching four Rainiers runs score on six hits over seven innings, while walking three and fanning seven.
The Rainiers return to action on Sunday at 1:30pm when they take the field in the second game of their four-game set with the Aces. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (3-2, 5.63) is slated to take the mound for Tacoma, with right-hander Matt Torra set to get the start for Reno.
