Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers rode an early lead to a 6-4 win over Sacramento at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.
The Rainiers wasted no time making their way on to the scoreboard in the outing, recording all six runs on seven hits over the first through the third innings. Infielder Matt Mangini was responsible for the initial strike after driving in Chris Woodward with an RBI-single. One out later first baseman Brad Nelson belted a two-run homer that put Tacoma's lead at 3-1.
The advantage ballooned to two runs in the next inning after outfielder Mike Wilson recorded his 14th home run of the season, blasting a solo shot with two outs in the second. Designated hitter Mike Sweeney drove in Mangini in the third with a double that extended the lead to 5-1. Sweeney scored two outs later off a single from outfielder Greg Halman.
The River Cats attempted to chip away at the lead with a late-inning rally. Infielders Jeff Baisley and Corey Wimberley notched RBI-singles as part of a two-run effort in the ninth that fell short.
Mangini's performance on Saturday was the brightest for Tacoma on a night where the third baseman went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Jeff Baisley led the Sacramento lineup after notching a pair of singles and driving in two runs.
Tacoma starter Andy Baldwin picked up his seventh win of the season after allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits over 6.1 innings with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts. The loss went to Sacramento starter Kyle Middleton after the right-hander gave up six runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings.
The Rainiers take the field again at 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon to begin the third game of their four-game set with Sacramento. Right-hander Ian Snell (3-2, 5.13) is scheduled to take the mound for Tacoma, with left-hander Brett Anderson (1-0, 6.75) set to toe the rubber for the River Cats.
