Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Brad Snyder's two-out, two-run homer in the top of the 13th inning cleared the maintenance shed beyond the centerfield wall and gave the Iowa Cubs a 4-2 victory over the Round Rock Express in Pacific Coast League action Saturday night at The Dell Diamond. The Express (42-59) fell to 4-7 in extra-inning games, including a 1-6 mark at home. The Cubs (56-45) lead the series 2-0 and hold a 10-4 advantage in the season series.
Snyder entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the 11th inning and struck out against Round Rock reliever Jonah Bayliss. He came to the plate in the 13th after Micah Hoffpauir drew a walk. Snyder took a ball from reliever Dan Meszaros before belting the game-winning home run.
That made a winner of Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2-0), who worked the game's final 3.0 innings without allowing a run or a hit; he walked one batter and struck out two. Starter Thomas Diamond worked 6.0 scoreless innings on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Carlos Zambrano, on a rehab assignment, pitched the next 2.0 innings; he scattered a hit with three strikeouts. Iowa used five pitchers on the night.
Meszaros (1-1) took the loss, working only the 13th inning. Snyder's homer was the lone hit he allowed. Starter Josh Banks left the game with two outs in the third inning after Diamond's comebacker hit him in the jaw. He allowed only a first-inning double with one strikeout. The Express used six pitchers on the night.
Hoffpauir provided the game's lone run through the first eight-and-a-half innings with a leadoff homer in the fourth. The Express scored an unearned run on two hits and an Iowa error. Brian Esposito tied the game with a two-out RBI infield single.
Iowa reclaimed the lead in the top of the 10th. Bobby Scales led off with a double and later scored on Sam Fuld's two-out RBI single. An error again allowed the Express to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th. Collin DeLome led off with a single, moved to second on Wladimir Sutil's sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. Matt Kata grounded up the middle with two outs, but shortstop Darwin Barney, who committed the error in the ninth, misplayed the ball and allowed DeLome to score the tying run.
Esposito was 2-for-5 with the lone multiple-hit game of the night for the Express. Fuld, Scales and Chris Robinson all had two-hit nights for the Cubs.
Round Rock and Iowa continue their four-game series Sunday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander T.J. Burton (2-3, 5.52 ERA) makes his second spot start of the year for the Express. Right-hander Casey Coleman (9-7, 4.17 ERA) is slated to start for the Cubs.
