Rain, Slow Start Sours Tourists Evening

April 18, 2017 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE--Monday night's game between the Asheville Tourists and the Kannapolis Intimidators started over an hour late due to a rain delay. When the game finally did begin, the Intimidators jumped on the Tourists with three runs in the first inning. Asheville never recovered and lost 5-3.

A double, hit by pitch, and single is how the first three batters of the game reached base for Kannapolis. A Tourists error plus an RBI single from Zach Remillard accounted for two more runs and after half an inning the Tourists trailed 3-0.

Kannapolis made it 4-0 after another error costs the Tourists in the fifth. Asheville did rally in the bottom of the sixth for two runs of their own. Vince Fernandez and Tyler Nevin each recorded RBI base hits. The Tourists cut the Intimidators lead to 4-3 when Colton Welker singled in Manny Melendez in the eighth.

Unfortunately, the visitors added an insurance run in the ninth while Asheville's final trip to the plate ended in a one, two, three frame.

Erick Julio suffered the loss despite settling in after the rough start. Julio struck out eight in seven innings of work. Asheville continued to do damage on the base paths accounting for three more stolen bases.

With the loss, the Tourists are now back at .500 on the season with a 6-6 record. The same two teams will face off in game two of their three game series on Tuesday night with the first pitch slated for 7:05pm.
