Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves fell behind late and dropped the series finale to the Akron RubberDucks 8-6 on Tuesday night at UPMC Park.
Akron jumped all over Erie starter Alfred Gutierrez in the top of the second inning, all with two outs. Daniel Salters and Alexis Pantoja each singled. Ernie Clement doubled down the left field line, plating Salters for a 1-0 lead. Andrew Calica was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Tyler Kreiger. Kreiger singled home Pantoja and Clement making it 3-0. Gutierrez walked Nellie Rodriguez and was lifted in favor of Christian Binford. Ka'ai Tom cleared the bases with a triple to make it a 6-0 game.
Erie got on the board in the last of the second against Akron starter Sean Brady. Isaac Paredes singled with one out and Jake Rogers followed with a two-run home run, his team-leading 17th to make it a 6-2 game.
The Ducks went ahead 7-2 in the top of the sixth. Clement doubled for the third time in the game and scored on a two-out Kreiger base hit. Seven of the eight Akron runs scored with two outs.
The 'Wolves continued to close the gap in the last of the sixth against reliever Matt Whitehouse. Josh Lester led off and blasted a solo home run to right, his 16th, making it 7-3. With one out, Rogers reached on an error, Dominic Ficociello walked and Will Maddox singled to load the bases. With two outs, Danny Woodrow singled home both Rogers and Ficociello to make it a two-run game at 7-5. Woodrow finished the night with four hits.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Erie again loaded the bases. With one out, Maddox singled, Troy Montgomery walked and Woodrow singled. Heavy rains followed and the game would go into an hour and 37 minute delay. When play resumed, Akron brought in reliever Jordan Milbrath, to face Sergio Alcantara. A wild pitch plated Will Maddox making it 7-6 but the 'Wolves would get no closer.
Akron added a run in the top of the ninth and Milbrath hurled a scoreless bottom of the ninth, earning his first save.
Brady (6-7) earned the win for Akron allowing two runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings.
Gutierrez (2-3) took the loss for Erie allowing six runs on five hits with three walks and no strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Note: Jake Rogers connected on a home run that hit the Ariens sign in left-center and one lucky fan was the recipient of a new Ariens Classic Snow Blower. Fans have four more games to enter to win beginning on August 31 at UPMC Park.
