Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Roster upheaval continued for the RailRiders on Tuesday night. Their leading run producer, 24-year-old outfielder Zoilo Almonte, became the 11th RailRider to get the call to the bigs this season. With two natural infielders in the outfield in Walter Ibarra and Addison Maruszak, the RailRiders fell behind Rochester early 4-0 by the middle of the second. But starter Brett Marshall rebounded, retiring the final nine he faced and giving his team six solid innings. The long ball got SWB back in it. Former Red Wing Randy Ruiz got his first as a RailRider to get his newest club on the board in the fifth, 4-1. J.R. Murphy bombed his first Triple-A dinger to spark the seventh for a 4-2 margin, but that was the only run in the frame as the RailRiders left the bases loaded. Cody Grice singled home Dan Johnson for a one-run game in the ninth, but Alberto Gonzalez grounded out to conclude the 4-3 game.

ROSTER MOVES: Before yesterday's game, the New York Yankees announced three roster moves for the RailRiders. Almonte got the call to the bigs as did pitcher Adam Warren, while southpaw Francisco Rondon joined SWB from Double-A Trenton. Almonte departed with a .297 average and a team-high 36 RBIs. His dozen doubles tied him for second on the squad while his six home runs knotted him up with the team's third-highest total. Almonte went 3-for-6 in yesterday's Monday's doubleheader, including his team-best 21st multi-hit game of the season. He departed with an 11-for-20 (.550) showing over his last five games and a team-high .354 June average. Warren never threw during this stint with the RailRiders, but joined the team on the heels of a "quality start" in relief with six scoreless innings during the Yankees' 18-inning loss at Oakland on Thursday.

SIZZLING SOUTHPAW: Rondon began the year in Trenton's rotation, but struggled in six starts to a 2-2 record with a 7.16 ERA and five home runs allowed in 27.2 IP. In nine appearances since moving to the bullpen in early May, he went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and .210 batting average against. As a reliever, he posted more than a strikeout an inning. Overall, he held lefties to a .196 average. He fired three scoreless innings to close out last night and give his team a chance. It was not his Triple-A debut though. He hurled one game for SWB at the end of last season on Sept. 3, 2012 at Pawtucket.

PINSTRIPE PIPELINE: Per the Yankees' PR department, the big bombers entered the day having used 40 players on the 2013 season after using 45 in all of last year. Seventeen of those players have made their first-ever appearance as a Yankee, with five players, all former RailRiders, making their Major League debuts (INF David Adams, RHP Preston Claiborne, INF Corban Joseph, RHP Brett Marshall and LHP Vidal Nuno). The Yankees entered the day as one of five MLB teams to use at least 40 players already in 2013 (also Toronto-46, Miami-42, Los Angeles-NL-40 and Seattle-40). Almonte started today's doubleheader against the Dodgers without MLB experience.

UNDER THE SEA: SWB is eight games under .500 for the second time on the season and in the series. Before this set it was last eight below .500 on Aug. 30, 2005 after an 8-2 loss at Syracuse dropped it to 65-73. The franchise has not been nine under since it was 30-39 after a June 21, 2005 win over Columbus. At the time, the-then Red Barons were a Phillies farm club while Columbus housed the Yankees' top minor leaguers. Dave Miley took over as the Yankees' Triple-A manager in 2006 and the affiliation changed to SWB in 2007. Gene Lamont, the 1993 A.L. Manager of the Year with the White Sox, managed SWB in 2005. He is currently the bench coach for the Detroit Tigers.

OFF THE RAILS: Maruszak has hit safely in nine straight and 20 of 21...Over the longer span, he has hit .329 (24-for-73) with eight doubles...SWB fell to an IL-worst 7-13 (.350) in one-run games...The club also lost in its first rubber match of the season...Ibarra had 15 career outfield starts in 435 games before last night.
