RailRiders Succumb to Mets Rally

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse Mets plated four late runs in a 6-2 comeback win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at NBT Bank Stadium Saturday. Despite a solid start from Chance Adams and a double-digit hit total, the RailRiders could not claim their second straight win on the roadtrip.

The Mets, playing as the Butter Sculptures in honor of the upcoming New York State Fair, tallied a run within the first two batters in the bottom of the first. After Rajai Davis worked a leadoff walk against Adams, Arismendy Alcantara doubled down the left field line, plating Davis from first on a hit-and-run for a 1-0 lead.

The RailRiders nearly evened the score in the second, but Ryan McBroom was thrown out at the plate while trying to score on a double by Zack Zehner. In the third, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre loaded the bases with one out. Clint Fraizer lifted a fly to center, bring home Mike Ford on a sacrifice to tie the game at one.

Adams settled in from the second inning on, facing the minimum in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, allowing just one hit and hitting one batter over that stretch.

The RailRiders took the lead in the top of the sixth. Tyler Wade scored on a passed ball to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 2-1 lead, but Ruben Tejada hit a solo home run off Adams to start the bottom of the seventh to square the game again.

In the eighth, Wade singled but was out trying to stretch the hit to a double. With two away, Kyle Higashioka walked and moved to second on a single by Breyvic Valera. Ryan McBroom singled to center and Higashioka was waved to the plate. Davis, the Mets centerfielder, threw to third and a tag was applied to Valera before Higashioka could score, ending the inning. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Jay Bell argued the call and was ejected.

Syracuse capitalized on two miscues in the bottom of the inning to build a 6-2 lead. Gregor Blanco singled off Stephen Tarpley and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw. A Travis Taijeron double put runners on second and third with no one out before Tarpley walked Rymer Liriano. After striking out Davis with the bases full, Tarpley induced a chopper back to the mound from Alcantara, but the pitcher's throw bounced past the plate while trying to prevent the go-ahead run from crossing. Blanco and Taijeron both scored to put the Mets up by two. Will Carter relieved Tarpley, but gave up a two-run single to Tejada to cap the scoring.

The RailRiders added two more hits in the ninth but could not bring another run across. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre outhit Syracuse 14-6 Saturday night in the loss. Thairo Estrada, Wade, Higashioka and Zehner all had multi-hit nights for the RailRiders.

Adams allowed two runs on three hits over 6.2 innings with four strikeouts. Tarpley (4-1) took the loss while Jacob Rhame (3-1) was the pitcher of record when the Mets recaptured the lead.

The RailRiders now hold an 11-5 I-81 Series advantage with three games left between Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Syracuse this season.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Syracuse conclude their four-game set on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. The RailRiders will pit Brody Koerner and against the Mets and Ervin Santana.
