RailCats Swept in Doubleheader

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The RailCats were swept by the Pheasants in Saturday night's doubleheader, losing game one 2-0 and falling 10-1 in game two. The 'Cats (16-25) have lost four straight games and seven of their last eight.

The RailCats were shutout on seven hits in a 2-0 loss in game one.

Tyler Deetjen, a rookie pitcher out of Valparaiso, was signed earlier in the day and made his professional debut in the start for the RailCats. The Pheasants scored the only runs of the game off of him in the third, as Jonny Kaplan hit an RBI double and Jared Bolden brought knocked in a run with a safety squeeze.

Deetjen (0-1) allowed two runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings for the loss. He had one walk and one strikeout.

The RailCats best scoring chance came in the sixth, when Mike Massaro and Mike Coles reached on back-to-back singles to start the inning. However, Brian Kolb struck out and Sean Henry hit into an inning-ending double play.

Peter Gehle (3-3) threw five scoreless innings for the win. Kyle Mertins threw the sixth and Cody Evans pitched a perfect seventh for his sixth save.

Cesar Nicholas hit a two-out RBI double in the first to give the Pheasants a 1-0 lead in game two.

The Pheasants would then homer off of RailCats starter Kyle Wilson (1-3) in each of the next three innings. Corey Morales hit a two-out, two-run blast in the second, and Trevor Laworn did the same in the third. Jonny Kaplan's one-out solo shot in the fourth increased the lead to 6-0.

Sioux Falls added four more runs in the sixth inning, with two RBI by Nicolas and one apiece by Bolden and Mark Shorey to make it 10-0. Morales was 4-for-4 in the game and 6-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Pheasants starter Mark Michael (5-2) shut down the RailCats, holding them scoreless until the seventh. With runners on the corners and two out, his wild pitch scored Mike Coles as the RailCats avoided back-to-back shutouts. The run ended a 22-inning scoreless streak by Pheasants pitching and a string of 17 innings without a run by the RailCats offense.

Game three of the four game series will be on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. Will Krout (0-2, 4.33) will start for the RailCats gainst Alan DeRatt (2-2, 4.68).
