St. Paul Saints News Release
FARGO, ND (June 30, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints are glad that the month of June is over as it ended on a sour note with an 11-2 thrashing at the hands of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field finishing the month 11-15.
Saints starter Todd Mathison was tremendous in his first start of the season on June 22 going 8.0 innings, a season high by a Saints starter this season, but he didn't have the same fortune against the RedHawks. In the first he gave up four consecutive singles to start the game off, with the third one of the inning by Nic Jackson scoring a run. With the bases loaded Mathison walked Ryan Delgado and Marcos Rodriguez to force in runs and give the RedHawks a 3-0 lead. Mathison managed to get out of the inning with a pop out and a double play.
In the second inning, however, he wasn't as fortunate as the RedHawks sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs. Carlo Cota reached on a walk and Zach Penprase, who finished the night with four hits, singled him to third and Penprase advanced to second on the throw. With one out they intentionally walked Jackson, but Jon Gaston followed with a two-run double to make it 5-0. The next batter Ryan Delgado singled home two to make it 7-0.
The Saints got on the board in the top of the third when Benji Johnson singled and advanced to second on Jon Townsend's single. With two outs and runners at the corners Jim Rapoport extended his hitting streak to nine with an RBI single to right-center to make it 7-1.
The RedHawks, however, answered with two in the bottom of the inning to put the game away for good. Cota led off and reached on a hit by pitch and Penprase followed with a two-run homer to left, his first of the season, to make it 9-1. Mathison went 5.0 innings allowing nine runs on 11 hits while walking four and striking out three.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (3-3, 4.42) to the mound against RedHawks LHP Jake Laber (1-3, 4.87). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
