RailCats Sign Former Valparaiso Pitcher Deetjen

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The RailCats have signed rookie left-handed pitcher Tyler Deetjen out of Valpariaso University and named him the starter for game one of Saturday night's doubleheader at Sioux Falls. The RailCats also activated infielder K.C. Judge off the disabled list and placed left-handed pitcher T.J. Wohlever and right-handed pitcher Nick Polsinelli on the 7-day DL retroactive to June 29.

Deetjen, 22, will make his pro debut tonight. He was 8-3 with a 3.12 ERA as a senior at Valparaiso this season. In 17 games (16 starts), he threw a school-record 121.1 innings, striking out 65 and walking just 11. Deetjen was named Second Team All-Horizon League and made the Horizon League All-Academic Team. He won two games in the Horizon League tournament, including the championship game and was named to the All-Tournament team.

The St. Charles, Ill., native was third all time at Valpo in innings pitched and eighth all-time in wins. He was fourth in all of the NCAA with a 0.82 walks per nine innings ratio.

Tonight's doubleheader begins at 5:05 p.m. and will be the opener of a four-game series and an eight-game road trip for the RailCats. The active roster sits at the league maximum of 22.
