RailCats Split Sunday Doubleheader

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The RailCats scored six runs in the first inning of game one on their way to a doubleheader split against the Saints on Sunday afternoon. The 'Cats took game one 9-6 and fell 4-2 in game two. The RailCats and Saints took two games apiece in the series.

The RailCats offense exploded in the first inning of game one. After Adam Klein struck out, the next eight RailCats reached. Rico Washington hit an RBI single and Brian Kolb drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Mike Rohde and David Cooper each hit two-run singles to chase starter Alberto Rolon from the game with still just one out. Josh Cephas came on in relief and escaped the inning without any further damage.

RailCats starter Derek Johnson ran into trouble in the second. The Saints sent 11 men to the plate as Jon Townsend, Willie Cabrera and Ronnie Borquin each hit two run singles to tie the game at six. Morgan Coombs relieved Johnson for the final out of the inning.

The game remained tied until the fifth. Cooper led off with a walk and moved to third on Mike Massaro's double to left. Mike Coles hit a check-swing grounder to second that scored Cooper to give the RailCats the lead.

The RailCats added on in the sixth. James, Kolb and Rohde hit consecutive singles, with Rohde's hit driving in James. Cooper drove in a run with a fielder's choice grounder, as Kolb dove around the tag of the catcher Alex Garabedian at home plate.

Will Krout gave up a hit and a walk, but was able to escape the ninth for his second save. Rookie Morgan Coombs (1-0) threw a scoreless 2 1/3 innings for the win.

Craig Maddox led off the second inning of game two with a homer to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead. It was the RailCats first home run of the season.

St. Paul took the lead in the fourth. Ronnie Borquin hit an RBI double and former RailCat Tanner Townsend hit an RBI bunt single on a safety squeeze to make it 2-1.

In the fifth Massaro hit his third double of the day and fourth of the season. Maddox drove him home with a single to tie the game at two.

The Saints answered right back in the bottom of the frame. Jon Townsend doubled and was driven home by a double from Jose Hernandez. Chris Allen came on in relief and gave up an infield hit to Ole Sheldon that scored Hernandez and gave the Saints a 4-2 lead.

Saints starter Robert Coe (1-0) pitched 6 1/3 for the win and reliever Dan Sattler pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the save. RailCats starter Andrew Johnston (0-1) surrendered four runs in 4 1/3 in the loss.

The RailCats hit the road for Kansas City, where they start a three-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Mike Perconte (0-0) will start for Gary against former RailCat Brian Grening.
