Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
It took three different ways to win, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes have started the 2012 season with a three-game sweep of the Amarillo Sox.
After two comeback wins, the Goldeyes (3-0) scored early in a 9-3 win over the Amarillo Sox (0-3) Sunday night at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium before 3,946 fans.
"It was a great team effort," said Goldeyes designated hitter Jon Weber, who finished the game three-for-five with two RBI and two runs scored. "Everybody stepped up and everybody produced."
Winnipeg used four singles and two walks in the top of the first inning to take an early 4-0 advantage.
Price Kendall's two-out double in the fifth inning scored Ridge Carpenter from second base to give the Goldeyes a 5-0 lead.
After Amarillo broke the shutout with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, Winnipeg restored the five-run lead with an RBI single from Weber.
Winnipeg found some trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning and saw their lead shrink. Goldeyes reliever Alex Jones got a strike out to begin the inning, but then walked two Sox and gave up a single to load the bases. Kaohi Downing came into the game and surrendered a sac fly to Jake Opitz, followed by Harrison Kain making it 6-3 on a stolen base and wild pitch.
The seventh inning struggles woke up Winnipeg's bats, though. The Goldeyes scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 9-3 lead and cement the victory.
Winnipeg starter Matt Rusch pitched into the sixth inning, becoming the first starting pitcher for the Goldeyes to do so this season. He surrendered one unearned run and four hits, while striking out four and walking one.
The Goldeyes will travel overnight to Laredo. Winnipeg begins a three-game series with the expansion Lemurs tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. Lefty Fabian Williamson gets the start for the Goldeyes, while Laredo counters with Mark Haynes. The pre-game show with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290 begins at 7:00 p.m.
