El Paso Diablos News Release
EL PASO, TX- The Diablos gave the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks a scare in the ninth, but their late rally fell two runs short as the visiting RedHawks held on for a 3-1 win at Cohen Stadium, winning three out of the four games with El Paso to begin the season.
El Paso starter Freddy Flores (0-1) was effective in his six innings of work, allowing only one run on an infield RBI single by Marcos Rodriguez. RedHawks starter Alex Caldera (1-0) was a notch better, however, shutting out the Diablos over six and a third innings of work, striking out seven before giving way to the bullpen.
For the first time in the series, the RedHawks struck first with their sole run off Flores in the 4th inning. The game remained 1-0 into the 8th, when Enrique Cruz blooped a two-out, RBI single to left field to score Ryan Stovall, who entered the game as a pinch hitter for shortstop Zach Penprase in the 5th.
Fargo-Moorhead tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth off reliever Marcel Prado to take a 3-0 lead into the ninth. Closer Tom Boleska allowed four of the first five batters he faced to reach base, resulting in a run for the Diablos and at one point bringing the potential winning run to the plate. But Boleska got Maikol Gonzalez to hit a comebacker with two outs to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
The Diablos now head out for their first road trip of the season, a three-game set with the defending American Association champion Grand Prairie AirHogs. The Diablos' starters in the series will be Reymond Cruz (in his second season with El Paso), Erik Blackwell (0-1) and Osvaldo Rodriguez (1-0). Game one of the series is 6:05 p.m. start, with the final two games beginning at 9:35 a.m.
