Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Gary SouthShore RailCats saw a six-game road win streak grind to a halt with a 13-3 loss in the opener of a six-game roadswing at the hands of the Sioux City Explorers, who scored four unearned runs in the victory.
Sioux City took advantage of a first inning error to score three unearned runs and open a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after the RailCats failed to score, leaving runners at second and third in the top of the frame. Wally Backman, Jr., T. J. Bohn, and Brett Flowers all recorded RBI singles against RailCat starter Ryne Reynoso.
The RailCats were finally able to score a run in the top of the fifth against Sioux City starter Richard Salazar, who threw 6.2 innings in his second start with the team to earn the win. Chris Carrara and Adam Klein collected hits to lead off the frame before a sacrifice moved both runners up. Brad Boyer put the RailCats on the board with an RBI groundout.
Another error capped a four-run sixth for the Explorers, who opened a 7-1 advantage. Reynoso exited after allowing consecutive hits to open the inning, and both runners would score later on an RBI groundout from Flowers, and an RBI single by Ryan Priddy. Dustin Jones added an RBI single off reliever Nolan Nicholson while the final run crossed on an error. Reynoso allowed two earned runs in five innings with a pair of strikeouts but took the loss in his second start with the team.
They tying run came to the plate in the top of the seventh, but the X's dodged further damage after the RailCats plated a pair. Carrara, Klein, and Mike Massaro posted singles to load the bases. Boyer knocked home his second run of the day with a sacrifice fly and Cristian Guerrero also posted a sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded, Mike Rohde was robbed on a sliding catch in left from Bohn.
The Explorers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added four more in the eighth to account for the final total, putting together the most runs and hits in a game against the RailCats this year. Klein, Massaro, and Carrara posted three hits each as the RailCats put together 12 in the affair. Klein has reached in 22 straight road games with Massaro reaching in 25 straight away from U. S. Steel Yard. Guerrero had a pair of streaks close in the loss as a 15-game hitting streak and 27-game on base streak came to a close with an 0-for-3 showing. The outfielder did drive home a run to match his career high with 63 RBIs for the season.
The series continues tomorrow night with another 7:05 p.m. date between the two clubs. LHP Alain Quijano (5-3, 4.57) starts for the RailCats opposite RHP Ty Marotz (5-3, 4.77) for the Explorers.
The RailCats return home for a brief three-game series against former Northern League friends the Kansas City T-Bones on Friday, August 5 for a 7:10 p.m. game featuring plenty of activities at U. S. Steel Yard including post-game fireworks, postgame music in the Diamond Club, and Greek Night and a Negro League Celebration. For tickets call (219) 882-2255 or visit railcatsbaseball.com.
