St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB (July 29, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints struck out a season high 15 times, wasted a phenomenal pitching performance by Matt Long and lost 4-2 on Friday night at Shaw Park to the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Both starting pitchers were incredible in game one of a pivotal three game series with the Saints coming into play trailing the Goldeyes by a game in the North Division. Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida was on a strikeout tear fanning six in a row, from two outs in the first until the second out in the third, until Justin Snyder singled with two outs in the third. For good measure Salamida struck out Adam Frost to strike out the side in the third and fanned seven in the first three innings.

After striking out two in the fourth the Saints finally got to Salamida in the fifth. With one out, after a strike out to Richard Mercado, Jonathan Van Every singled to center. Salamida walked his only two men of the evening, Alex Garabedian and Snyder, to load the bases. Adam Frost reached on an infield single to short scoring Van Every for a 1-0 lead. The Saints couldn't add to the lead with the bases loaded and one out as Shane Costa struck out and Ole Sheldon grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Argelis Nunez gave the Saints a 2-0 lead in the sixth with a lead off solo homer, his second of the season. Salamdia wound up going 6.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out a career high tying 12.

Long, on the other hand, was cruising through the first six innings. He allowed just a one out single in the first to Kody Kaiser, a two out walk to Brian Myrow in the fourth and a one out single to Price Kendall in the sixth. In the seventh, however, trouble would loom. Myrow and Jon Weber led off with back-to-back singles putting runners at the corners. A ground out by Luis Alen scored the run to make it 2-1. Justin Bass, who leads the team with 12 homers, crushed a two-run homer to left to give the Goldeyes a 3-2 lead. It was the 12th home run Long allowed this season.

The Goldeyes would add to the lead in the eighth on a double by Kaiser. Long would get the second out of the inning and leave for reliever Kyle Carr. He walked Myrow and then gave up a slow chopper to second by Weber and Snyder tried to bare hand, came up empty and the ball got by him allowing Kaiser to score. Long went 7.2 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking four and striking out two.

The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Alberto Rolon (6-3, 4.15) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Luis Villarreal (5-2, 4.17). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
