RailCats Hang on for 7-6 Win Over Kansas City

GARY, Ind. - In a hotly contested affair Saturday at U. S. Steel Yard, the Gary SouthShore RailCats managed to fend off the feisty Kansas City T-Bones to earn a 7-6 win and even the series at a game apiece.

Saturday's contest was a mirror of last night's ballgame, this time with the home team prevailing, as the first-place RailCats (46-32) improved their American Association-best home record to 24-11. The 'Cats jumped out to an early lead and were able to stymie the Kansas City (38-40) comeback effort to force the rubber match Sunday.

With a three-hit, three-RBI performance that included a double, left fielder Adam Klein led the charge for the RailCats offense, which put up 14 hits on the night and featured eight of nine starters with at least a tally in the hit column. Brad Boyer and Mike Rohde smoked a pair of hits each and both doubled off the U. S. Steel Yard wall. Chris Carrara helped the cause with two hits of his own and added an RBI as well for the 'Cats.

RailCats starter Scott Shaw (9-3, 4.51) grabs his seventh win in his last 10 starts, a stretch that includes three no-decisions as well. Over his 5.2 innings of work, the University of Illinois alum surrendered just two runs on five hits adding six strikeouts and walking five. RHP Travis Minix earned his seventh save in a RailCats uniform, pitching the final 1.2 innings and striking out three to preserve the victory.

The 'Cats jumped all over T-Bones starter Trent Lare in the early going and forced an early exit for the southpaw. In 4.2 innings, the RailCats accumulated 10 hits and five runs off Lare to take a 5-1 lead. Carrara singled home Haines in the second for the game's first run and Klein drove in Rohde to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead after two. After the T-Bones got on the board via a Rico Washington homer in the fourth, the 'Cats came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Designated hitter Brian Kolb and Carrara crossed the plate on a double by Klein, who scored two batters later on a Boyer single.

The score was 5-2 RailCats in the seventh, when Boyer scored on a laser into right field off the bat of Craig Maddox. Maddox entered the game in the top of the sixth after Kyle Haines was unable to continue due to a right thumb injury suffered during a hard slide into second to break up a double play the previous inning. Rohde's double off the wall, which was originally ruled a home run, drove home Maddox and gave the 'Cats a 7-2 advantage.

It was a good thing the RailCats scratched across the two insurance runs in the seventh as the T-Bones came up with four runs in the top of the eighth but couldn't get any closer as Minix staved off the Kansas City rally and sent the home fans home happy.

The RailCats will activate LHP Alain Quijano (5-4, 5.28) off the disabled list to start Sunday's 2:10 p.m. rubber match, and LHP Reid Santos (7-5, 5.17) gets the ball for the T-Bones on a Day at the Races at U.
