Saints Continue Slide at Home to Goldeyes, Lose 4-3

ST. PAUL, MN - Home field doesn't mean much when the Winnipeg Goldeyes and the St. Paul Saints meet. Neither team has won a series on their home turf and it's been worse for the Saints, who lost for the seventh straight time to the Goldeyes at Midway Stadium 4-3 on Saturday night in front of 5,630 and are now 2.0 games back in the division.

The Saints had their chances outhitting the Goldeyes 13-7, but couldn't come up with a big hit during the evening. With the Saints down 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth Jonathan Van Every hit a solo homer to right, his 18th of the season, and third in two games. With one out Adam Frost doubled down the left field line to put the tying run in scoring position. Shane Costa grounded out to short moving Frost to third. Ole Sheldon, however, struck out to end the game.

The Saints were forced to play catch up from a three-run deficit and got to within a run in the seventh. Van Every singled with one out and with two outs Frost hit a two-run homer to left, his sixth of the season to make it 3-2.

The Saints relievers couldn't keep it at a one run deficit, however, as Kyle Carr walked Louis Ott and Ridge Carpenter, the eight and nine batters, with one out in the eighth. Kyle Foster took over for Carr and he walked Price Kendall to load the bases. After Kody Kaiser popped out for the second out, Foster forced in a run with a walk of Brian Myrow, which proved to be the winning run.

Saints starter Edwin Walker pitched well, but three, two out base hits drove in the first three runs. In the third Kendall doubled and scored on a two out single by Wes Long.

In the fourth Ott doubled with two outs and scored on Carpenter's RBI single to make it 2-0.

The final two out base hit came in the seventh when Kendall doubled with one out and scored on Myrow's two out RBI single. Walker went 6.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three.

The same two teams meet Sunday afternoon in game three of the three game series at 1:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Matt Long (6-8, 5.47) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Luis Villarreal (5-2, 4.10). It is A Day of Champions: Honoring Minnesota's 2010-2011 winners.
