Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts signed first baseman Carlos Rivera late Saturday afternoon.

Rivera is expected to hit cleanup tonight for the Wingnuts in the middle game of their three-game series at Sioux City.

The left-handed batting Rivera recently finished his season with the Mexican League's Petroleros de Minatitlan where he hit .316 with 11 home runs and 62 RBI in 103 games played.

Last season, Rivera hit .372 with six home runs and 16 RBI in 28 games for the Wingnuts following his first tour with Minatitlan. Rivera has a combined eight years of experience in the Mexican League and at the Triple-A level. The Fajarda, Puerto Rico native won the Mexican League batting title at .410 in 2007 while playing for Oaxaca.

Now in his 15th season of professional baseball, Rivera is a lifetime .308 hitter with 195 home runs and 969 RBI. Rivera has more hits (1,778) than games played (1,642) throughout his 15 professional seasons, averaging 20 home runs and 97 RBI per 162 games. The 33-year old slugger spent parts of two seasons in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003 and 2004, appearing in 85 games.

Rivera was drafted by the Pirates in the 10th round in 1996 out of Rio Grande High School in Puerto Rico. Rivera fills the open spot on the Wingnuts' roster that was vacated earlier in the week when center fielder Brent Clevlen was purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Wingnuts continue their series tonight at Sioux City with Chad Sherman taking on right-hander Nick Schumacher. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com after the completion of the 5:00 p.m. game at the 77th annual NBC World Series.

The Wingnuts return home from their 15-game road swing on Tuesday, August 16th when they host the Kansas City T-Bones. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
