RailCats Grounded in Fargo, Drop Third Straight Game

FARGO, N.D. - T.J. Stanton and two Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the 'Hawks blanked the Gary SouthShore RailCats for the fourth time this year and coasted to a 7-0 win Thursday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.

The loss for the RailCats was their third straight following a three-game winning streak, and gave the RedHawks three wins in the four-game series. The 'Cats have been shutout only four times all season, but all four have come at the hands of the RedHawks in just 11 games between the two teams. Only once did the RailCats get a runner as far as third base Thursday as Fargo improved to a league-best 22-11 at home.

Adam Klein led off the game with a single against Stanton (3-3), stole second and went to third with two outs following a groundout. That was the best RailCats chance of the day, and Cristian Guerrero battled valiantly in an 11-pitch showdown with Stanton before ultimately striking out to end the inning.

Fargo scored five of their seven runs with two outs including the game-winning tally in the bottom of the first. Mike Coles singled to lead off the game and was at third with two outs for Casey Hoorelbeke, who singled into left. Eric Campbell hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to make it 3-0, and Hoorelbeke finished off the 'Cats with his league-leading 19th longball of the year, a three-run bomb with two outs in the fifth.

Brad Halsey (3-5) suffered the loss for the RailCats, allowing both home runs and six total runs in 5.0 innings of work. Halsey surrendered nine hits and two walks and lost for the third time in his last four starts. Three RailCats relievers finished the game, including infielder Louis Ott, who pitched for the second time and worked a scoreless eighth.

The RailCats did draw five walks in the game and went down in order only once, but never did get the key base hit. Mike Reese had two singles to account for half of the RailCats offense, with Tanner Townsend collecting the other 'Cats hit in the fourth. Mike Rohde walked twice, as did Guerrero.

Stanton went 6.0 innings and allowed two hits and four walks in his seventh start of the year. Matt Petrusek and Jeremy Hauer closed out the game with three innings of scoreless relief work.

The RailCats (26-30) come home Friday night at 7 p.m. to start a seven-game homestand with the Lake County Fielders (21-31) in town. Right-hander Willie Glen (5-2, 2.95 ERA) will start for the RailCats with Lake County sending fellow right-hander Garry Bakker (3-5, 5.28 ERA). The game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and at www.railcatsbaseball.com.

Friday night is another Money Giveaway, presented by NIEMI Associates and Indiana 105 at U. S. Steel Yard, with the first 1,000 fans getting and envelope filled with cash - up to $100 - when they walk through the gates. Notes: The RailCats have lost 11 of their last 14 games overall ... the loss drops the 'Cats a season-worst four games under .500 ... the RailCats conclude their seven-game road trip 3-4 ... the RedHawks and RailCats will not play again in Fargo in the regular season, with Fargo taking five of the eight games between the two clubs at their home park ... the four hits are the lowest output for the RailCats since RedHawks right-hander Matt Mossey took a perfect game into the eighth inning June 24 in Fargo.
