Joliet JackHammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - Brett Durand struck out nine and allowed one run as the Rockford RiverHawks (25-30) earned a four game split with the Joliet JackHammers (29-26), taking an 8-2 decision Thursday night at Silver Cross Field. Joliet has split the first ten matchups with Rockford with four left between the two clubs this season.
Rockford again jumped out in the first, scoring the fourth straight day in their first at-bat. John Wagle doubled off Ross Stout (5-6) and would later score on a Jason James sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead.
The RiverHawks broke the game open with four in the seventh. Jono Brooks laid down a bunt single and scored on a Jake Eigsti triple to right. James followed with an RBI single and Rich Austin connected on a two run shot to right center for a 7-1 advantage.
Stout allowed seven runs on ten hits in 6.1 innings, suffering his first loss against Rockford in seven career starts.
The JackHammers got on the board in the third and cut the Rockford lead to 2-1. Jonathan Wyatt doubled with one out to center and would score on a two out single by Brad Correll.
That was the lone tally against Durand (5-5), who struck out nine and walked four in his 6.1 frames. Joliet did manage seven hits against the right-hander but stranded ten on the base paths.
Josh Flores provided some excitement in the bottom of the ninth, flying around the bases for an inside the park home run. Flores slammed it to right center and James crashed into the wall attempting the catch. The ball deflected into center field, allowing Flores to race around the bases for his second pinch hit homer of the series.
Wyatt and Chris Colton led the 'Hammers with two hits apiece while Jon Nelson extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an eighth inning single.
The JackHammers hit the road for six games, starting tomorrow night in Fargo. Todd Privett (4-4) will go up against fellow southpaw Scott Fogelson (5-2). Game time is set for 7:02 p.m. with a 6:52 pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
