Brownell Spectacular In Fielders' Win
July 22, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Lake County Fielders News Release
WINNIPEG, MB- John Brownell led the Lake County Fielders with his best performance of the season and the Fielders won their third game of the four game set from the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Canwest Park, in a game delayed 44 minutes by rain.
Brownell (2-4) threw 124 pitches over nine innings, his first complete game of the season, allowing two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out two. The win is his first since May 30.
The Fielders' offense did just enough to get the win for Brownell and had the answer each time Winnipeg scored.
The Goldeyes were on the board first with a Justin Justice RBI single in the second inning, which scored Kevin West, but the Fielders fought back in the third.
Adam Hale scored on a Juan Valdes RBI groundout and Anthony Esquer scored on a wild pitch to give Lake County a 2-1 lead.
The Goldeyes pulled even in the fourth on an RBI groundout of their own from West, scoring Wes Long. Winnipeg would have later taken the lead, if not for a great play by Lake County right fielder Brian McFall.
Justice hit a double down the line, and McFall, after navigating the tarp and the bullpen mound, picked up the ball and fired it in to second baseman Guillermo Martinez, who turned a great relay throw to third baseman Amos Ramon, who tagged out Justice trying to stretch his hit into a double. The play ended the inning, but the Goldeyes had already tied the game 2-2.
The Fielders' offense continued to come up with the clutch hit in big situations, answering back in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good.
With one out, Juan Valdes doubled down the left field line. Ramon followed up his four hit performance from Wednesday with his second triple of the season, over the head of Winnipeg center fielder Aharon Eggleston to score Valdes and give Brownell all the support he would need.
Winnipeg starter Jason Mackintosh (0-1), just acquired from Maui of the Golden League, pitched well in a losing effort, allowing three runs on seven hits in eight innings. He walked three and struck out one.
The Fielders now travel to Gary for a three game weekend set with the SouthShore RailCats, beginning Friday at 7:00 pm, before returning to Zion on Monday for 16 games in 14 days at Fielders' Stadium.
