Flyers Earn Split In Doubleheader
July 22, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
The Flyers (21-34) dropped the first 6-2 in a doubleheader against the Kansas City T-Bones (35-19), but battled back to take the nightcap 4-2 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
In game one, Kansas City jumped out on top of Schaumburg starter Todd Moser (1-6) in the third. Dwayne White led off with a triple into left center field and came around on Eladio Rodriguez's base hit. Later in the frame, Ray Sadler launched a bases clearing triple to give the T-Bones a 4-0 lead.
The Flyers battled to score two in the top of fourth when Travis Brown, Ron Bourquin, and Joey Gomes all notched base hits to start off the inning. Gomes' single brought in Brown and Bourquin scored on a Richard Mercado sacrifice fly, a ball deep to right center field that Kansas City center fielder Keanon Simon robbed with a spectacular diving catch.
That was all Schaumburg would get as White capped off his big game with a two run home run off of newly activated Jim Popp to put the game out of reach. White finished just a double short of the cycle and was 3-3 with 2 RBI.
Moser allowed four runs in five innings of work, giving up four hits. The winner for Kansas City was left hander Reid Santos, who surrendered just two runs on seven hits over six innings.
In the second game, it took both teams a while to heat up. The Flyers left seven men on base in the first four innings and starter Alain Quijano cruised through the T-Bones vaunted lineup.
In the fifth, the bats woke up when Joey Gomes crushed a two run shot to left to put Schaumburg on the board. But, in the bottom of the frame, Kansas City struck for two as well on a Jimmy Mojica groundout and Simon single back up the middle.
But the rest of the game belonged to the Flyers with runs in the sixth and seventh for insurance. Josh Giles came in to pitch a scoreless inning of relief for Quijano and Cody Evans steered clear of two on, one out jam in the seventh to notch his second save of the year.
Giles picked up his first win for the Flyers and Drew Graham took his first loss of the year for the T-Bones.
The Flyers conclude their three game set with the T-Bones Thursday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
