Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - A pair of three run innings and the third straight quality start from Alex Gunn led Gary to a 6-2 win over the reigning American Association Champion Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday night in the rubber game, giving the RailCats their fourth straight series victory. The series finale win also improved Gary's record to 7-2 during their season-long 10-day homestand.
Reggie Abercrombie gave Winnipeg (10-9) the opening lead for the third straight game with a solo home run to begin the inning. The homer was the former MLB outfielder's second of the season and increased his American Association career home run total to 117.
Gary (11-7) jumped in front 3-1 in the sixth with three two-out runs. Andy De Jesus gave the 'Cats their first lead of the night with a two-run single before Mitch Glasser increased the lead to two with an RBI single to center.
The Goldeyes trimmed the RailCats lead to one with their final run in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third and one out, Matt McCann brought home Victor Cruzado, however, right fielder Colin Willis prevented Winnipeg from tying the game after getting Jordan Edgerton out at the plate after the third baseman tried to score from second.
The 'Cats pulled away with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Cole Fabio made it 4-2 with a sacrifice to fly right before Alex Crosby extended his season-high on-base streak to 15 games with an RBI infield single. De Jesus brought home the final run of the night with an RBI double to the left field wall, giving him his second of two hits and the final of his three RBIs.
Gunn (3-1) yielded two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out a pair over 6.1 innings. The southpaw extended his season-high scoreless innings streak to 15 before giving up the solo homer to Abercrombie in the fourth and retired 10 of the final 12 hitters he faced before getting replaced by Keaton Steele with one on and one out in the seventh. Steele (3) recorded his team-best third hold with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief while Gabe Perez secured the win with a scoreless top of the ninth in a non-save situation.
Austin Boshers (0-3) was charged with the loss in fourth start. The veteran right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three in six innings.
The RailCats begin a season-long seven-game road trip on Thursday night in Fargo, N.D., against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 7:02 p.m. LHP Lars Liguori (1-1, 3.52) makes his second start for Gary against Fargo-Moorhead RHP Trey McNutt (0-2, 4.74) in the series opener.
