March 25, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Regina, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders (2-3-1-1) were downed 5-3 by the Regina Pats (2-3-2-0) in the Subway Hub Centre at the Brandt Centre in Regina on Thursday evening.
It was the Raiders' fourth consecutive defeat.
Remy Aquilon, Landon Kosior, and Eric Pearce all scored for the Raiders. Tyson Laventure chipped in a pair of assists.
The Raiders started strong in the opening period, forcing the Pats into taking two penalties. However, they weren't able to strike on the man advantage despite some good chances to convert. At the midway point of the period, the Raiders were outshooting the Pats 10-1.
It was the Pats, however, that got on the board first, finding the back of the net on the power play with 48 seconds left in the period. Carson Denomie beat a screened Carter Serhyenko from the right faceoff circle to give Regina a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The Raiders were able to tie things up 6:49 into the second. Aquilon took a drop pass from Michael Horon circled the zone. The Raiders defenceman waited, changed his angle, and snapped a shot from the point that got through traffic and past Pats goaltender Matthew Kieper for his first of the season, tying things up at 1-1.
Regina regained their lead with 6:59 to play in the middle frame. Cole Carrier's shot from the shot deflected off a stick in front of the Raiders goal and found Braxton Whitehead at the side of the goal. Whitehead was able to lift it over Serhyenko's pad to make it a 2-1 game for the Pats.
Shortly after, the Pats extended the lead with a shorthanded goal. The puck got out of the offensive zone and Carrier was able to skate himself into a breakaway. The forward put a shot off the post and in to give the Pats a two-goal advantage with 5:09 to go in the middle frame.
The Pats made it a 4-1 game 5:15 into the third period. On a rush into the Raiders' end, Drew Englot put a shot towards the Raiders goal that was stopped by Serhyenko. The rebound found the stick of Carter Massier who deposited it into net to increase Regina's lead.
Shortly after the goal, Logan Nijhoff took a major penalty and received a game misconduct for kneeing Spencer Moe. The Raiders had some chances early on the five-minute power play, but eventually took a penalty of their own to bring two minutes of four-on-four hockey. During that span, Connor Bedard found Layton Feist to his right as the Pats entered the zone. The defenceman went far side on Serhyenko to put the Pats ahead 5-1.
The Raiders got back on the board with 8:25 to go. Niall Crocker carried the puck into the middle of the zone and got it to Pearce. The Regina product's shot from the slot beat Kieper high on the blocker side for his third of the season, making it a 5-2 game.
Kosior got the Raiders back within two with a power-play goal with 5:08 remaining. On the ensuing faceoff after the penalty was called, Reece Vitelli won the draw. Kosior collected it, and dished it to Justin Nachbaur. The Cross Lake, MB product gave the puck back to Kosior at the blueline. The Regina-born defender stepped into a wrist shot that picked the corner over Kieper's glove.
It was as close as the Raiders came as they were unable to find another goal with Serhyenko pulled late for the extra attacker.
Serhyenko finished the game with 21 saves for the Raiders. Kieper stopped 26 Raider attempts for the Pats.
The Raiders are back in action on Saturday night when they take on the Moose Jaw Warriors (4-3-0-0) in the Subway Hub Centre. Game time is 8 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV.
