March 25 Preview: Wheat Kings vs Ice at 9pm

March 25, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Regina, SK - After a runaway win against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday night, the Wheat Kings will look to make it back-to-back wins in as many nights when they take on the Winnipeg ICE tonight at 9 PM.

Last time they met

In their first meeting this season on March 13th, the Wheat Kings got the best of their provincial rivals winning 3-2 in regulation with goals from defenceman Braden Schneider, rookie forward Brett Hyland and a goal and assist by forward Jake Chiasson. The Wheat Kings got off to a good start but it was the ICE who opened the scoring, courtesy of a Conor Geekie breakaway. However, the Wheat Kings didn't let it get to them, scoring three goals in the second period and locking the ICE down on the defensive side.

Chiasson showing consistency

Chiasson's redirection of a point shot stood as the game winner last time the Wheat Kings and ICE met, but the second year forward was held off the scoresheet for the next three games. Luckily for the Wheat Kings, he's found his way back on to it finishing Monday's game against the Saskatoon Blades with an assist and then having a big game last night against the Warriors with two goals and a helper. The second-year forward has looked noticeably mature since his rookie season in 2019-20 and has proven to be a dangerous offensive weapon for the Wheat Kings. His shot is strong and fast enough to beat WHL goalies and his added size since last season means he's been able to hang out in the tough areas near the net for longer.

Kruger standing tall

Another great performance that helped the Wheat Kings beat the ICE on March 13th came from netminder Ethan Kruger, who was only tested 24 times but had to make some very key stops in the win. Kruger's been solid so far this season sporting a 3-1 record, 0.895 %, and 2.79 goals-against average. Facing an average of 26.6 shots a game, Kruger has looked solid in net and will most likely get back between the pipes after Connor Ungar got the win last night against the Warriors.
