October 27, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage hockey team stayed part of an elite group in the Central Hockey League tonight. The Rage accompanies Laredo, Youngstown and Texas as one of four undefeated teams remaining early this 2007-08 season. Rocky Mountain defeated the Arizona Sundogs tonight 5-4 at the Broomfield Event Center off of a late overtime goal by defenseman Tyler Butler.
The Arizona Sundogs improve to 3-1-1 (7 points) for first place in the Southwest Division, while the Rage improves to 4-0-0 (8 points) for first place in the Northwest Division.
The Rage came out to an early lead when right winger Nathan Rosychuk wristed a shot over the shoulder pads of Sundogs goalie Bill Zaniboni just 51 seconds into the game. Clay Plume and Scott Wray assisted on the play. It marked Wray's team-leading eighth point this season in four games. The Rage continued to pepper Zaniboni with eight shots on goal within the first four minutes of play.
Colt King gave the Rage a 2-0 lead to close out the first period when he picked up a pass from right winger Chip Dunleavy and shoveled it in net under the pads of Zaniboni.
Arizona got on the scoreboard in the second period when Rocky Mountain was called for a bench minor for too many men at 3:06. Sundog Tyler Redenbach centered the puck from behind the net and Alex Leavitt tipped it in on the power-play. Leavitt scored again at 7:12 for Arizona's game-tying goal.
Rocky Mountain did not waste any time earning the lead once again just over one minute later. Team-leading scorer, Scott Wray earned his ninth point with a goal from Daymen Rycroft. It ties Wray for fourth place in the Central Hockey League in scoring. Both teams fought following the goal creating a stoppage in play. Rocky Mountain's Pat Sutton was called for unsportsmanlike conduct while Arizona's Jonathan Bernier was assessed a double minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and roughing. The Rage was scoreless on the one man advantage and goaltender Zaniboni kept the Sundogs in the game the remainder of the second as the Rage outshot 13-5. Not until 14:32 did the Rage solve Zaniboni. Rage blueliner Nick Harloff skated into the zone from the left wing and set up a play for Daymen Rycroft and Trevor Weisgerber who scored on the power-play. The Rage led 4-2 going into the third period.
Arizona fought its way back in the third, dominating the period in shots 15-6 over the Rage. Arizona produced two goals in the effort by Tyler Redenbach at 3:43 on the power-play and Oliver Latendresse at 12:07 to tie the game and go to overtime.
Both teams produced three shots a piece in overtime, all scoring chances. It was not until 44 seconds left in overtime on the power-play that Rocky Mountain's D-man Tyler Butler made a slap shot from just inside the blueline. Zaniboni was screened out front and the puck flew straight to the back of the net giving the Rage the win.
The Rage returns to action Tuesday night (Oct. 30) when they host the Colorado Eagles at the Broomfield Event Center.
