TONIGHT'S GAME: The third of a five game home and home series with the next three in Richmond (the Tides took the first two at Harbor Park) and the eighth of 16 meetings, the third of eight at The Diamond. Richmond is 3-4 vs. the Tides, 1-1 at home.. Game one of a five game homestand (Richmond was 0-6 on the road trip that ended last night). The 30th of 48 meetings vs. South Division clubs (Braves are 12-17 vs. the South) and the 15th of 24 home contests vs. South Division clubs (Richmond is 6-8). The Braves were 5-11 vs. the Tides last season, 3-5 at The Diamond. The Braves are 354-403 all-time vs. Norfolk. The Braves are fourth in the South, 27 games behind first place Charlotte. The Tides are third in the South, 23.5 games out.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Tides beat the Braves 3-1 Sunday night at Harbor Park. The Tides scored three runs in the last of the ninth to send Richmond down to their eighth straight loss.The Braves snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh on a solo home run by James Jurries. That lead held up until the ninth inning. With two outs Sandy Martinez singled scoring Victor Diaz to tie the game. Pinch hitter Tagg Bozied followed with a two-run, walk-off home run to give the Tides the 3-1 win. Steve Schmoll picked up the win. Manny Acosta took the loss. Kevin Barry pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Anderson Hernandez had two hits for the Tides.
BEHIND THE EIGHT BALL: The Braves have lost eight straight games and 10 of their last 12. The Braves are a season low 31 games under .500. This is the Braves second eight game losing streak. They also lost eight straight on the way to a club record 12 game losing streak in June. Richmond is a season high 27 games out of first place.
IN LIKE A LION, OUT LIKE...: The Braves opened July winning six of the first nine games in the month. They were still over .500 for the month on 7/22 when the current losing streak began. Richmond is now 10-17 in July. The Braves opened June winning four of five but finished June 7-20.
STREAKING: Gregor Blanco has hits in five straight games (9-20 .450). Bill McCarthy's three game hitting streak ended last night. Carlos Mendez has hits in the last eight games he's started. RHP Manny Acosta has earned a save in each of the Braves last five wins. He has six saves in July. His streak of six straight converted save opportunities ended last night. Since allowing three runs vs. Charlotte May 30, Wayne Franklin has allowed just four runs in 21 appearances over 31.3 innings (1.15 ERA). Phil Stockman has not allowed a run on the road with Richmond this season (seven appearances, 14 innings pitched on the road).
BRAVES BITS: Braves pitchers are 11-52 (.211) at the plate this season with a SB and one RBI. Braves pinch hitters are 5-43 (.117). The Braves are 4-14 since the All Star Break. The Braves have made 87 roster moves this season. 16 different R-Braves have earned call ups to Atlanta this season, two more than in all of last year.
