Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Joseph, MO - Wil Quintana scored a run and drove in two others to lead the Sioux Falls Canaries (29-17) to a 4-3 victory over the St. Joe Blacksnakes (15-31) on Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium. The Canaries 29th win of the half matches their total from the second half of 2001 as the franchise's highest win total in a half season.

The Canaries opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Wil Quintana led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a single by Abner Arroyo. Ben Van Iderstine came to the plate with runners on the corners, and brought in Quintana despite bouncing into a double play. Quintana's run gave the Birds an early 1-0 lead.

St. Joe took advantage of three Canaries errors in the bottom of the second inning. David Fowler led the inning off with a walk. Canaries starting pitcher Micah Posey had Fowler picked off first base, but an error by Canaries shortstop Orlando Miller allowed Fowler to reach second safely. Dustin Yount followed with an RBI single to right field scoring Fowler to tie the game, 1-1. Quintana misplayed the ball in the outfield, and the right-fielder's error allowed Yount to second base. With Yount on second and two away, Curt Miaso hit a groundball to Canaries' second baseman Damon Lessler. Lessler threw the ball away at first allowing Yount to score and put St. Joe ahead 2-1. After Miaso stole second base, Casey Gordon singled to score him, and after two innings the Blacksnakes were up by a pair of runs, 3-1.

The Canaries came back to take the lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Lessler and Cameron Couglan led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put two on for Miller. Miller laid a bunt single up the third base line. Blacksnakes starting pitcher Dustin Boulton tried to make a play at third by flipping the ball to the base despite the fact that nobody was covering the bag. Lessler came in to score on the pitcher's error, and brought the Canaries within one, 3-2. Miller and Coughlan advanced to second and third on a deep flyout by Will Smith. Quintana followed with a go-ahead doubl to bring Coughlan and Miller home and give the Canaries a 4-3 win.

Micah Posey (2-5) allowed only three unearned runs on four hits in seven innings of work to get his second win of the season. Posey struck out eight and walked one. Dustin Boulton (1-4) suffered the loss for St. Joe. Jerrod Fuell bounced back from Thursday's blown save to record his league leading 13th save of the season by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth inning.
