Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The hunt for a more productive line-up for the Pelicans just received a big boost in Napoleon Calzado. The Pelicans announced today that they have received Calzado in a trade with the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League. Calzado joins the team on their current Northern Division road trip in Sioux City, IA against the Explorers.

Calzado is a career .295 hitter with 171 doubles, 36 triples, 45 home runs, 216 walks, and 204 stolen bases in 10 seasons, mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. He originally signed with the Orioles in 1997, working his way up the organization to double-A in 2002 and triple-A in 2003. The speedy righty made his Major League debut in 2005 where he played in four games.

"Napoleon will add a solid veteran hitter to the middle of our line-up," said Pelicans Manager Mac Seibert. "He has a proven history and will add some leadership to our young club."

The Santo Domingo, DR native has made two all-star teams; in 2002 in the South Atlantic League and in 2001 in the Carolina League. His highlight season came in 2004 with the Greenville Braves in the double-A Southern League. He finished with a league best .359 batting average, second in hits (161) and on-base percentage (.395), and fifth in triples (7). Calzado also had 28 doubles, 8 home runs, 59 RBI, and 18 stolen bases.

This season, Calzado has split time with the triple-A Tabasco of the Mexican League and the Jackals. In three games with New Jersey, he was hitting .308 with one run scored and one RBI.

In exchange for Calzado, the New Jersey Jackals receive right-handed pitcher Hunter Davis and a player to be named later to complete the transaction.
