Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Nov. 1, 2015) - Alan Quine scored on a breakaway 1:30 into overtime as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers won 3-2 over the Utica Comets on Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena.
Both teams stared off slow with not much occurring in the first half of the opening frame. Utica opened the scoring with Travis Ehrhardt's first goal of the season with helpers by Blair Jones and Linden Vey at 9:54 in the first.
The first penalty of the night went to John Kurtz for goaltender interference so the Sound Tigers went on a power play at 17:02. A little over a minute later Blair Jones joined him in the sin bin for slashing at 18:07.
Ryan Pulock took advantage of the 5-on-3 with a blast from the high slot at 18:53. The goal was Pulock's third of the season, tying him for the second in goals amongst AHL defensemen.
Midway through the second period, former Sound Tiger Andrey Pedan broke his stick on a slap shot, but Alexandre Grenier was in the right place and batted towards the net. The puck somehow beat Bridgeport netminder Christopher Gibson to give Utica the 2-1 lead.
Bridgeport went back to the power play when John Kurtz was called for interference. Again, Pulock was the catalyst with an almost identical slap shot that was tipped in by Justin Vaive. Pulock's second power play point of the night came off Vaive's third goal in as many games.
The Sound Tigers continued to look solid on the power play with another close call from Quine that Mike Halmo tried to bat in. The power play expired and the Tigers stayed tied at 2-2 with the Comets.
The game headed to 3-on-3 overtime for the first time at Webster Bank Arena this season. The fast paced overtime started with a good look by Taylor Fedun but Christopher Gibson thought otherwise, making the save.
In a wacky end to the game, Utica thought they had scored with the puck on the goal line, but Gibson and Halmo somehow kept it out. The puck found its way up to Alan Quine who had a breakaway for 180 feet as Utica was celebrating the non-goal. Quine skated in and beat Comets goalie Joe Cannata high to the glove side for Bridgeport's first overtime win of the season.
Quine receives first star honors and the power play hero Pulock was named star number two.
Gibson had to make just 17 saves for his fourth win of the season, while Bridgeport tallied in half their power plays while going 3-for-3 on the kill.
The Sound Tigers play again Wednesday afternoon when they host the Hershey Bears. Puck drop is scheduled for 11 a.m.
