Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, Ind. - Reigning American Assocation Pitcher of the Week Alain Quijano was spectacular in eight shutout innings to lead the RailCats to a 1-0 win over Sioux City on Wednesday night in the series rubber match. The RailCats (8-5) remain in first place in the American Association Central. Six of their eight wins have come by a single run.

The RailCats scored the lone run of the game in the second inning with two outs when Zac Mitchell blooped a base hit to left to score Ryan Babineau from second. Babineau appeared to suffer an injury when scoring and was removed from the game after the inning.

Quijano held the Explorers scoreless on three hits until the seventh inning, when they put together a threat with two outs. Bryan Pounds reached on an infield single and Leugim Barroso followed with a single to move Pounds to third. Quijano was able to induce Alberto Espinosa into an inning-ending fielder's choice to squash the threat.

In the eighth inning, Quijano returned to the mound and continued his marvelous work. Pinch-hitter Adrian Martinez singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on Eliezer Mesa's sacrifice bunt. With a runner on second and one out, Alain got Yusuke Inoguchi to pop out to first and Wally Backman Jr. to ground out to first to end the inning.

Quijano (3-0) has won three consecutive starts, during which he has allowed just one run in 19 innings. He held the Explorers to five hits, walked one and struck out four.

Marco Gonzalez pitched around a one-out error in the ninth to record his second save of the season.

The RailCats have an off day on Thursday as they travel to El Paso, Texas to begin a three-game series on Friday night at 8:05 p.m. CT. Left-handed pitcher Ari Ronick is scheduled to throw for the RailCats in the series opener.
