Explorers Defeat Gary 6-4 In Rain Shortened Contest

Gary, In-----The Explorers snapped a two-game losing streak with a rain shortened 6-4 victory over Gary South Shore here Tuesday.

With one out in the top of the eighth inning a torrential downpour hit US Steel Yard in Gary with the Explorers leading 6-4. After waiting the necessary thirty minutes, the contest was called and the Explorers were the winners.

Sioux City took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning only to have the Rail Cats come back and tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the first. Gary then took the lead in the second inning 4-3 on a run scoring double by Chase Tucker.

In the top of the third, the Explorers got a lead off infield single by Wally Backman, Jr. which was followed by a one-out single by Peter Barrows. Then Palmer Karr doubled in the gap in right centerfield that scored Backman and Barrows to give the X's a 5-4 lead. The Explorers then added an insurance run in the seventh when Eliezer Mesa scored on a double play, the third double play the Explorers hit into in the contest. Mesa with two hits extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Starting hurler Preston Olson pitched five innings to even his record at 1-1 while Rail Cats starter Will Krout took the loss.

The win put the Explorers back to the .500 mark at 6-6 with the final game of the three game series at Gary Wednesday starting at 7:10pm
