Quick Strikes Help Quad City Stifle Eagles' Streak at Seven
February 8, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - The Quad City Mallards stopped the Colorado Eagles' winning streak (and former Mallard Kyle Jones' winning streak) at seven with a 4-1 win. David Brown -- the CHL's top goalie in terms of goals-against average and save percentage -- stopped 33 shots, and the Mallards answered the Eagles lone goal 29 seconds after it was scored, then used two goals just 57 seconds apart later in the game to forge an advantage they wouldn't relinquish.
The Eagles got the game's opening goal at 8:09 after a faceoff in the left circle led to a rebound goal by A.J. Hau. But less than half a minute later, the Mallards tied the score when Tyler Shelast sent a pass from below the goal line to Eric Giosa in the slot for a snap-shot past Jones (who was named the league's Goaltender of the Week earlier in the day).
Quad City took the lead 2:06 into the second period when Joe Blaznek scored a power-play goal with a wide open shot from the point. And just 57 seconds later, Mike McLean made it 3-1 when he stole the puck at the left mid-boards, skated into the left circle and beat Jones. The Mallards had a chance to make it 4-1 with just over five minutes left in the second stanza when Shelast was awarded a questionable penalty shot, but Jones stopped him.
With a two-goal lead heading into the third period, the defensive Mallards played their game to perfection. Brown stopped all 14 shots sent his way in the final frame, and Shelast ended up getting his second score with an empty-net goal at 18:38.
The Eagles will wrap up their four-game road trip in Missouri on Friday before the Mavericks visit the Budweiser Events Center on Saturday and Sunday.
