Quakes Make History In 23-8 Win
July 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes made history on Monday night, burying the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 23-8 at Mavericks Stadium.
For just the second time in the California League's 70-year history, a team scored in all nine innings. The 2008 San Jose Giants are the only other team to accomplish the feat, in a 12-2 win at Bakersfield on June 30th.
Monday's win saw several offensive highlights, with Gabe Jacobo hitting the team's second grand slam of the year and driving in a team season-high six runs. Angel Castillo finished with four hits and four RBIs, becoming the third Quake this year with a pair of homers, as he swatted two of Rancho Cucamonga's five round-trippers on the night.
Every starter not only had a hit and an RBI, but all nine Quakes had multi-hit games and only Dillon Baird and Jesus Campos failed to drive in more than one run.
Clay Fuller joined Castillo with a four-hit game, while Rian Kiniry, Alberto Rosario, Jacobo and Baird all had three hits each to pace the season-high 26-hit attack.
Quakes' catcher Alberto Rosario hit his first homer of the year for the Quakes, as part of a five-run first inning. The Quakes had a 10-0 lead over High Desert starter Andrew Carraway (5-5) heading to the bottom of the third, as both Angel Castillo and Rian Kiniry went deep in the third.
Quakes' starter Matt Shoemaker gave up four in the bottom of the third inning, as Dennis Raben capped the frame with a three-run shot, his first of two homers on the night, making it 10-4.
The Quakes responded with four of their own in the fourth, as Baird highlighted the frame with a solo shot, his ninth of the year.
The teams traded runs over the next few innings with High Desert scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth against Shoemaker. Shoemaker (7-6) would depart with a 16-7 lead after six innings, as he allowed seven runs on 12 hits.
Castillo ripped a two-run shot in the seventh, his seventh of the year and second of the game, making it 18-7.
Jacobo capped his six-RBI game with a grand slam in the eighth off of Marwin Vega, giving the Quakes a 22-7 lead.
Kiniry scored the Quakes' final run in the ninth, coming home on a passed ball by Mavs' catcher Ralph Henriquez to make history and give the Quakes a 23-7 lead.
The Mavs capped the scoring in the ninth, as Raben hit his second homer of the night, taking Kyle Hurst deep to make it 23-8.
Denny Almonte also had a pair of home runs for High Desert, giving him 16 on the year.
The Quakes improve to 6-6 in the second half and close to within two games of first-place High Desert in the South Division. Manny Flores (2-4) will look to give the Quakes two of three in this series, as he takes the ball on Tuesday night in the series-finale. High Desert left-hander Anthony Vasquez (5-2) will head to the mound for the Mavs, with first pitch slated for 7:05pm.
The Quakes return from the six-game road trip next Saturday night, opening up a three-game series against High Desert at The Epicenter. July 10th is Millennium Systems Fireworks Night, as everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Display, thanks to Millennium Systems and KOLA 99.9. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
