Mavericks Doubled Up by Quakes, 4-2
July 6, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
Seeking to win their first home series since mid-May, the Mavs looked good getting out to an early lead. However, they couldn't sustain the momentum, and they lost to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4-2 Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium.
Looking to respond after getting blown out on Monday, the Mavs delivered an early message by scoring twice in the first. Dennis Raben hit an RBI double to put the Mavs up 1-0.
They had runners at second and third with none out, but could only get one more run via a Rich Poythress RBI groundout. It turned out to the Mavs final run of the night.
With none on and two out in the top of the second, Clay Fuller drew a walk after he was down 0-2. Angel Castillo came up next and cranked his third homer in two games to tie the game.
Jesus Campos led off the third with the first home run of his brief professional career, putting the Quakes in the lead to stay.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Mavs loaded the bases with nobody out but could not score. Hawkins Gebbers and Shaver Hansen each lined out to infielders, and Kyle Seager grounded out to end the inning.
The Quakes added the final run of the night in the fifth. Campos reached on an error by Hansen with one out. Two batters later, Alberto Rosario sent a ground ball to third misplayed by Hansen than turned into an RBI double to make it 4-2.
The Mavs had a couple of runners on with two outs in the sixth, but Seager grounded out to end the inning. They failed to collect a hit over the final three innings, as the Quakes bullpen retired 10 of the last 11 to come to the plate.
Eddie McKiernan retired the Mavs in order in the ninth to pick up his 15th save of the year.
Manny Flores allowed just one earned run over six innings for the Quakes, always getting big outs when he needed them. Flores (3-4) gave up seven hits, walked two, and struck out three.
Mavericks ace Anthony Vasquez had a bit of an off night by his sterling standards, allowing four runs--three earned--over seven innings. Two of the five hits he allowed were homers, equaling his previous total with the Mavs. Vasquez (5-3) struck out four and walked two.
With the loss, the Mavs are now 1-5-5 in home series and have lost five of the last seven series at Mavericks Stadium. They look to claim one of those elusive series wins when they welcome Visalia to town Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. It's Meet the Mavericks Wednesday, where you can can come to the park early and head down to the field to get autographs and meet your favorite players.
